GLASGOW —
A pair of five-run innings from Johnson County sparked a 12-2 loss for the Barren County Cynergy in the first round of pool play at the 12U Ohio Valley Regional softball tournament. Barren’s Kennedy Logsdon provided two hits, an RBI, one run and tossed three innings of relief in the defeat.
Logsdon also kick-started the Cynergy offense in the top of the first by caroming a one-out single off first base. A passed ball moved her to second before Jayce Edwards rolled a hit down the third base line to send Logsdon sprinting for third. Johnson County starter pitcher Micilyn Pierce soon deflated any hopes for a rally, though, forcing a fielder’s choice groundball and strikeout to end the inning.
With one out in the bottom of the frame, Johnson’s Lauren Delong slapped a single through the left side of the infield to bring in lead off batter Blair Watson and hand the Eagles a 1-0 lead. A throwing error landed Delong at third and a subsequent passed ball doubled the advantage.
Barren’s Kenzie Wells dropped a single in centerfield in the top of the second, but Barren was unable to parlay the hit into a run. Johnson had better luck, racking up five scores in the bottom of the second and forcing a pitching change en route to building a 7-0 cushion.
The Cynergy sliced into that cushion in the top of the third. Morgan Clay opened the inning with a rip into right field. Logsdon followed by sky-ing a triple to deep center to plate Clay and pull Barren within six. A passed ball on the subsequent at-bat sent in Logsdon to cut the Eagle lead to five. Edwards kept the offense moving with a walk, but a pop out and failed sacrifice bunt ceased the Cynergy momentum.
A trio of Pierce strikeouts in the top of the fourth ensured Barren wouldn’t get any closer, as Johnson rattled off five additional scores in the bottom of the frame to run rule the Cynergy 12-2.
Pierce threw a complete game, striking out six. Logsdon led Barren with three K’s.
Due to inclement weather and scheduling problems, the game began roughly four and a half hours after its orignally scheduled start time. A series of storms that swept over Glasgow and Barren County Wednesday night and into yesterday morning cancelled all scheduled morning play and moved some Thursday afternoon games into this morning.
In the 14U bracket, Barren County’s matchup with a Southern Indiana opponent, which was initially set for 4 p.m. yesterday, took place this morning at 8 a.m. The 14U squad will face Rhineland at 6 p.m. tonight.
The 12s played D.C. Everest (Wis.) at 10 a.m. and will face a Southern Indiana opponent at 5:30 p.m. this evening. All of the aforementioned games will take place at Beaver Trail Softball Complex.
In the Western Kentucky Babe Ruth 15U State baseball tournament, the SC-Barren Trojans will face Owensboro at 6 p.m. at Jackie B. Browning Park.
