GLASGOW — At tournaments with shortened, Little-League-length fences, Barren County’s all star teams have won not with home runs, but with pitching.
The 11 year-old’s starting pitcher Ellis Wininger shut down Hancock County Saturday night, allowing only one hit and striking out 10.
According to manager Brandon Wininger, the team’s pitching staff has allowed only five hits in three games.
The win over Hancock County vaulted the team into the Monday night’s championship game in Hawesville.
Ten-and-under pitchers Drew Shockley and Michael Belcher combined for a 5-4 win over Meade County in their tournament in Henderson.
Belcher also provided some offense in the top of the first inning, hitting a two-run homerun.
Barren trailed Meade until the fifth inning, when Andrew Base doubled and brought Belcher and Eli Jolley home to score.
Taylor Morgan gave Barren the lead in the sixth with a solo homerun, giving Belcher the opportunity to shut down Meade’s offense in the final frame.
The 10U’s played Germantown (Louisville) in the winner’s bracket championship game on Sunday. Information on the game was not immediately available.
Barren’s 12 year-old all stars beat LaRue County in a noon game on Saturday.
Garrett Payne tossed a complete game.
The team, coached by Brad Hagan, fell in their 5 p.m. game, however, despite, according to Hagan, a “well-pitched” game from Jon Thomas Green.
