TOMPKINSVILLE — Neil Wilson does this every Friday.
According to Monroe County head coach John Petett, the senior wide receiver’s 98-yard, two-touchdown performance in the Falcons’ 34-14 win over Barren County Friday night is a regular occurrence.
“It’s never just a great night for Neil,” Petett said. “He does this every night.”
Wilson had help in the win, though. Dillion Vickery had his first 100 yard game of the season and quarterback Jackson Arnett tossed three touchdowns to hand Barren County its third consecutive loss after a dominating season-opening performance against Metcalfe County.
“We were beat by a better team tonight,” Barren County head coach Jeff Richey said. “But (my) kids played hard.”
According to Richey, many players with limited-to-no varsity experience were thrust into the lineup due a string of recent injuries for the Trojans.
Everything from shoulder to stomach problems limited Barren County players this week, leaving the team undermanned and strained from its thin depth chart.
“We played five or six freshmen that have never been on a varsity field,” Richey said.
Despite Barren’s injuries, it managed to stop the Falcons on their first drive thanks to a Kris Aquino interception. Two Colton Phelps rushes and incomplete pass later, however, Barren was forced to punt.
Monroe capitalized immediately by streaking down Barren’s sideline on a 67 yard option play began by Arnett. The junior quarterback capped the drive with a one-yard keeper to give Monroe a 7-0 lead with 5:49 to play in the first quarter.
The Trojans managed to move the ball on their next possession, but again were forced to punt. The Falcons again responded quickly in the form of a long Vickery run that was shortened due to a penalty, but still went for 46 yards.
And that’s when Wilson got involved.
The receiver caught a 22 yard-pass from Arnett to stretch Monroe’s lead to 14 just seconds into the second quarter.
After another Barren punt, Monroe’s next drive went deep into Trojan territory. A wide receiver pass option to Wilson fell incomplete in the back of the endzone, however, and Barren blocked Monroe’s field goal to prevent the Falcons from extending their lead.
The Trojans then proceeded to rip off two 20-plus yard plays (a 21-yard Tyler Hughes rush and 25-yard Phelps pass to Colby Long) and end their drive with a one-yard Phelps keeper to cut the lead to seven.
The shift in momentum didn’t last long.
In a little over a minute, Monroe scored again on a 39 yard Arnett pass to Wilson, giving them a two touchdown advantage heading into the half.
Barren struck first in the second. Unfortunately for them, however, it didn’t count.
Brandon Sneed recovered a Monroe fumble deep in Trojan territory, and Barren took over at their own 34 yard line with a chance to make the contest a one-touchdown game.
Barren began their drive with a quarterback keeper. After bouncing off a few would-be tacklers in the secondary, Phelps weaved into the open field and ran up the gut for a 66-yard touchdown.
A called chop block - or block below the knees - erased the play and pushed Barren back 15 yards from the original spot of the ball.
The penalty left Barren with a first and 25 to deal with, and the drive ended with a turnover on downs.
Later in the quarter, Arnett added another touchdown, finding Chad Wilson for a 15-yard score.
After a 40-yard Shelby Bailey run, Phelps answered with his own touchdown pass to Hughes a little more than two minutes later, but a 34-yard Vickory touchdown run near the beginning of the fourth put the game out of reach for Barren.
The win improves Monroe’s record to 4-0, and marked their first home win (and game) of the season.
Barren’s record now stands at 1-3.
Although he was proud of his team’s performance, especially due to their large number of injuries, Richey credited Monroe for their offensive play.
“(Monroe) had more playmakers on the field than we could stop,” Richey said.
Barren will travel to Grayson County next week to face the 4-0 Cougars, who have outscored their opponents 102-0 over the last two weeks.
Monroe will face 2-2 Logan County.
For now, Petett said he’s happy to be home and celebrating a win.
“We missed some opportunities tonight, and I think there were some nerves,” Petett said. “There are a lot of things we need to work on, but we got the win and that’s what’s important.”
