TOMPKINSVILLE —
Before a packed house Tuesday night, the Monroe County Falcons threw a wrench in this year’s District 15 playoff picture as the Falcons rolled over the Glasgow Scotties 61-45 in boys’ basketball action.
According to the latest Kentucky High School Athletic Association statistics, the victory put Monroe County in a tie with Allen County-Scottsville with a 2-3 district record. Glasgow fell to 2-4 in the district. Barren County leads the pack with a 5-1 district slate.
“I think we caught Glasgow on an off night,” said Monroe County coach Steven Kirkpatrick. “I have scouted them two or three times this year and every time I have seen them, they’ve shot the ball better than they did tonight. I think they just had a bad shooting night tonight.”
“You have to give Monroe County credit. Coach Kirkpatrick does a good job with that team,” said Glasgow coach John Tinsley. “We just didn’t play well tonight. Every team has a bad night and we had ours tonight.”
After finishing the first quarter in a 12-12 tie, the Monroe County Falcons went to work on both ends of the floor, slowly creating separation between them and the Scotties. The Falcons outscored Glasgow 15-9 in the second quarter to take a 27-21 advantage into the locker room.
“We wanted to try and contain their penetration in the lane,” Kirkpatrick explained. “We knew if they were able to do that, they would dish it off to their shooters. We thought if we could stop penetration, then we would have a better shot of closing out on their shooters.
“I thought we did a good job of that, but we were closing out with our hands low. We talked to them at halftime about closing out high, with a hand in their face. We did a better job of that in the second half.”
