GLASGOW —
It seems to happen to every team sooner or later, but sometimes you just have to take a team back to the basics. Sometimes it is best, when a team is not performing to its capabilities, to take a step back and regroup.
For the Monroe County High School Falcons, the 2012-13 season is one of those years. After going 9-18 last season, head coach Steven Kirkpatrick knew his team did not reach its potential so the veteran coach took his team back to ‘Basketball 101.’
“We have worked on becoming more fundamentally sound in every aspect of the game. During the summer and the pre-season we have broken down every drill to ensure the kids understand the basic fundamental parts of the game,” said Kirkpatrick. “A few examples are the different ways to defend ball screens, setting picks and opening up to the ball, running lanes wide in transition, communicating on defense and offense.
“Defensive rebounding and defensive position in the half court has also been a main priority. Basically we feel if we are fundamentally sound on both ends of the court then we will be competing and winning games.”
The Falcons open the season on the road when they travel to Edmonson County on Tuesday, Nov. 27. Monroe County’s first home game will be Friday, Nov. 30, against Metcalfe County.
