District champions

Glasgow boys beat BCHS by 1; Lady Scotties second

GLASGOW — Battling the blazing heat and a pretty tough golf course, the Glasgow Scotties and the Allen County Lady Patriots captured the District 15 Golf Championship Wednesday at the Barren River State Park.

The Scotties slipped by Barren County for the boys’ crown, scoring a 160 to the Trojans’ 161. Allen County Scottsville was third at 168 and Monroe County was fourth at 171.

The Glasgow Lady Scotties gave the Lady Patriots all they could handle, but came up just four strokes short. Allen County Scottsville fired a 160 with the Lady Scotties at 164. Monroe County was third overall with a 179 and Barren County finished fourth with a 187.

“There isn’t a lot of difference between us and Barren County and I think that showed today,” said Glasgow coach Mike Harris. “My top three players are playing pretty well, but we’re going to have to get a little more consistency out of our fourth and fifth spots.”

Chase Landrum and Steely Harris led the Scotties with 37s. Dalton Fant followed that up with a 42 and Thomas Kingrey shot 44. Michael Harris rounded out the scoring with a 49.

“Nathan played extremely well today and I am so excited for him,” said BCHS coach Robert Bauer. “I give Glasgow all the credit in the world. They played well and won the tournament. Some people may look at 161 and say that’s a pretty good round. Our definition of success has changed. And this was disappointing.”

Nathan Layton burned up the course with a 35 to win low medalist honors. Matt Turner shot 41 and Andy Highbaugh had a 42. Mark Shipley closed out the scoring with a 43.

Troy Tooley led the Monroe County Falcons with a 38. William Goodman had a 41 and Trey Isenberg shot 42. Jacob Lundy had a 50.

“I thought Emily (Alexander) played very well today,” said Glasgow girls’ coach Kellie Lee. “She had zero three-putts and shot a solid 38.”

Alexander’s 38 paced the Lady Scotties as they made their charge at the title. Ashton Foushee added a 39 and Taylor Phelps had 42. Emmalee Lawrence shot 45 and Katie Jones rounded out the scoring with a 52.

Kendall McPherson had the low round for the Monroe County Lady Falcons. She fired an impressive 43. Page Anderson and Mary Anderson cared identical scores of 45. Ashley Strong shot 46. Kelliemae Polston wrapped up the scoring with a 48.

“We have made some improvement since our last match,” said Barren County coach Jill Kinslow. “The ones that have been struggling played well today.

“But we’ve got to improve. We really need to practice on our putting.”

Lyn Dawsyn Steenbergen led the Trojanettes with a nine-hole score of 45. Kylie Withrow shot 46 and Amber Jewell had a 47. Jill Florence shot 49 and Emmory Shipley closed out the scoring for the Trojanettes with a 51.

The Trojanettes and the Lady Scotties will be back in action on Saturday when they participate in the Barren County High School Girls’ Golf Invitational at Barren River State Park.

Tee time is scheduled for noon.
