GLASGOW — Barren County swim coach Steve Metzger and Glasgow swim coach Lora Garrett described the teams’ performances in Friday and Saturday’s Region 1 meet in Owensboro as “outstanding” and “excellent.” Meghan Taylor and Ryan Metzger hope to hear those same adjectives after this weekend.
Both swimmers qualified for the 2010 KHSAA State Swim Meet, which will be at the University of Louisville on Friday and Saturday. Taylor sat a new school record in the 100 yard freestyle (56.43) to advance to state, while Metzger will move on in the both the 100 yard butterly and 100 yard back stroke.
According to coach Metzger, the complete list of qualifiers isn’t finalized yet, as inclement weather caused the cancellation of various region contests. The top two finishers in each event automatically qualify for state, but once all region results pour in, additional swimmers from each school could be called on to fill the extra 14 spots in each competition.
Garrett said Taylor could possibly qualify in the 50 yard freestyle once all region times are recorded.
Taylor’s teammates had some success in the region meet as well. Garrett said Stephanie Walton, Cameron Branham, Breanna Taylor, Dustin Thomerson and Abby Ponder all turned personal-best times in the meet.
“The GHS swimmers had an excellent meet,” Garrett said. “I’m very pleased with the results.”
The girls portion of the state meet will be held in the mornings, while the boys will compete in the afternoons.
