GLASGOW —
The Barren County Trojans led nearly the entire game Tuesday night, but they didn’t lead in the end.
With 25 seconds to go against Greenwood, the Gators’ Nick Smith stole a pass once the Trojans had dribbled across halfcourt and he made a layup at the other end to give his team a 48-47 lead. That would prove to be the final basket of the game at Barren County High School on Pink Out night.
Barren County coach Warren Cunningham said the plan was to call a time out when his team crossed halfcourt, but the official apparently didn’t hear the call, allowing Smith to get the steal.
That basket erased what had been a 14-point lead for the Trojans 37 seconds into the final period.
“We turned the ball over and missed free throws, things you can’t do when you have a lead,” Cunningham said.
Barren was 3 for 8 at the foul line in the fourth quarter. Greenwood was 6 for 7.
After Smith’s basket, the final seconds of the game were furious.
Jaucoby Poore, who led Barren with 16 points, got a drive to the basket, but couldn’t convert. The play ended with a jump ball and the possession arrow favored the Trojans.
On the ensuing inbounds play, the Gators knocked the ball away and recovered it. A fling to the other end of the court by a Greenwood player did not fully kill the clock, allowing Barren one last attempt to win the game. The Trojans attempted a fullcourt pass, but it was again knocked away and this time the ball bounced out of bounds and the buzzer to end the game sounded.
Barren took its first lead of the game with 3:48 showing in the first quarter on a basket by Poore. He scored the final six points of the quarter to give his team a 12-7 lead at the end of one.
The Trojans pushed their lead to 10 points, 28-18, at halftime and led 38-26 after three quarters.
After Poore, Dalton Bush scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Charley McCoy scored 10 points.
Wes Johnson led Greenwood with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The loss dropped the Trojans to 15-9, while the Gators improved to 16-7.
At halftime of the boys’ game, the Barren County Athletic Booster Club had a check presentation for $4,000 donated to the Barren County Relay for Life.
Barren County will host Hart County on Friday in a basketball double-header. The girls will play at 6 p.m. with the boys to follow at 7:30.

Couldn't give it up...
Until a few weeks ago, Glasgow High School senior Shelby Ray wasn’t sure if she would pursue sports into her college career. Although a standout basketball and softball player, Ray thought it was time for her athletic career to come to a close so she could focus solely on academics in college. But in the end, she said she couldn’t imagine walking away from softball.
