GLASGOW —
The Barren County Trojans dug themselves into a hole early Friday night and never could quite get themselves out as they dropped a 71-64 decision to John Hardin High School in the semifinals of the TJ Samson Community Hospital Holiday Basketball Classic at Glasgow High School.
“John Hardin is one of the favorites in the fifth region and this was a real challenge for us,” said Barren County coach Warren Cunningham. “We kind of dug ourselves a hole there and we struggled offensively. We struggled especially in the first half, I think Jaucoby (Poore) had half of our points. Other than him, it was a struggle to get going offensively.
“I think this shows us we’ve got to guard better. We’ve got to keep ourselves from getting in a hole and we can’t use the excuse that we didn’t make our shots. We’ve got to guard better so that we keep ourselves in reach. That way when we make a run, we’re able to tie it or take the lead, instead of still being down by five or six.”
The Trojans had battled their way from 32-20 deficit at halftime to get within 10 at 49-39 at the end of the third quarter. Baskets by Clay Simmons and Poore early in the period made it 38-27 for John Hardin at the 4:28 mark. And when Dalton Bush and Ben Leftwich made back-to-back jumpers, Barren County was within 10 at 43-33 with 2:02 on the clock.
