GLASGOW —
A very good defensive effort in the second half of their game against Warren Central last weekend helped the Metcalfe County High School Lady Hornets pick up a 56-47 victory and finish third in the South Warren High School Holiday Basketball Tournament in Bowling Green.
“We played very good defense in the second half,” said Metcalfe County coach Peter DiStefano. “They were very quick, but we were able to slow the game down with our zone. I am very proud of our kids (and the way they played) this week.”
Central took the early lead in the game, leading 10-9 after one period and 23-21 at the intermission. However, Metcalfe County came rolling back and took the lead for good in the third period when the Lady Hornets outscored Central 16-11 to lead 37-34 as the final period began.
Jordan Samuels had 19 points and eight rebounds to lead the Lady Hornets’ offensive production. MacKenzie Coleman contributed 18 points and six rebounds, while Tayler McMurtrey scored 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Riley Eskridge scored seven points, pulled down five rebounds, dished out three assists and committed five steals. Samantha Perry had one point.
The Lady Hornets must now prepare for two big district contests this week. Metcalfe County will host Cumberland County on Thursday and Clinton County on Friday.
