Most of the time, the most valuable player in a ballgame is the player who scores the most points, pulls down the most rebounds, or hits a big shot in the waning moments. For the Glasgow Lady Scotties Tuesday night, no one was more valuable than Ashley Smith and Kennedy Bailey.
Smith and Bailey combined for a total of 0 points and four rebounds.
However, they also combined to hold Monroe County standout Madison Clements to only 11 points as Glasgow knocked off the Lady Falcons 63-52 in the first round of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Girls District 15 Basketball Tournament at Barren County High School.
“I thought Kelsey Greer played like a champion tonight. Breanna Glover played terrific tonight and I thought Shalika Smith played like a warrior,” said Glasgow coach Justin Stinson. “Monroe County made some shots early, but I was really proud of my kids. We stuck with what we wanted to do defensively and the kids fought for the win.
“Monroe County made some shots early, but we got the people we wanted to take the shots. We wanted to limit Madison Clements. She got 27 and 34 points the last two times we played them and I was bound and determined that we may lose the game, but it wasn’t going to be because she got 30 again.
“I thought Kennedy Bailey and Ashley Smith were the keys to the game. Those two kids chased Clements all over the floor and they didn’t care about scoring. They did a great job defensively. Clements finished up with 11 points and she had to work for every one of them.”
The Lady Scotties will battle Allen County-Scottsville in the district championship game on Friday night. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
