Cherry named assistant coach at WKU

Former G. Mason assistant now a Hilltopper

BOWLING GREEN — Western Kentucky University hired Scott Cherry as assistant men’s basketball coach on Friday.

Cherry, 36, has spent the majority of his career as an assistant coach at George Mason. He worked two stints with the Colonials, one from 1999-2002 and one from 2003-2007 with a stop at Tennessee Tech in between. The Colonials never had a losing record while Cherry was on staff, and he helped George Mason make it to the 2006 Final Four.

“I’m anxious to get to Bowling Green and work not just with the returning players and incoming freshmen, but to begin recruiting to ensure WKU’s success in the future,” Cherry said.

Cherry’s duties will include recruiting, scheduling and coordinating the offense during practices and games.

“Scott brings excellent experience as a player, coach and recruiter,” said head coach Darrin Horn. “He has won at the highest level as a player and a coach.”

Cherry played at North Carolina under Dean Smith, helping the Tar Heels to the 1993 national championship.
