May 30 was a special day for Metcalfe County High School senior Megan Stephens.
She capped her high school days in style, signing a volleyball scholarship in the afternoon with Lindsey Wilson College before graduating from MCHS that night.
“It was kind of a rush, but it just happened to work out that way,” Stephens said. “It was just kind of a relief. I was pretty excited.”
Stephens was a 3-sport star for the Lady Hornets, playing volleyball, basketball and tennis. In the end, she chose volleyball over the other two.
“My mom always told me that playing sports in college was like a job, so I wanted to pick the one that I enjoyed the most,” Stephens said. “That was volleyball. I wanted the job to be fun, so that’s why I picked it.”
It wasn’t like Stephens didn’t have plenty of options to pick from. She narrowed her choices down to Brescia University for volleyball and tennis; Berea College for basketball; and Volunteer State Community College for basketball. Stephens also looked at Campbellsville University earlier for volleyball, among other schools.
Stephens picked the Columbia school for several reasons, the main one of which was the school’s academic reputation and the chance to learn in smaller class sizes
“I toured a bunch of other colleges,” Stephens said. “When I went out there, I just felt there was something special. I could see myself there. I liked the quality of the education, where the class size would be 20 instead of 200, maybe like at Western.”
Stephens also enjoyed the volleyball aspect of the school after going through a workout with her future teammates.
“The one at Campbellsville was so rough. At Lindsey Wilson, it was totally different,” Stephens said. “I actually had fun. I got to scrimmage with the girls. I worked hard, but it was still fun.”
The Blue Raiders went 15-24 last season with a 6-4 record in the Mid-South Conference. Lindsey Wilson, an NAIA school, is led by second-year head coach Chuck Amshoff.
