GLASGOW — Lady Scotties top Ohio County at Edmonson tourney

BROWNSVILLE — The Glasgow High School volleyball team defeated Ohio County at the Edmonson County tournament on Saturday.

The Lady Scotties also lost to Warren Central, Warren East and Edmonson.

The Lady Scotties dropped their second straight 2-1 decision to Central this season. After opening the season with a 2-1 loss, they fell 25-20, 22-25 and 15-13.

Glasgow topped Ohio 25-14 and 25-12 and fell to East 25-14 and 25-22. The Lady Scotties fell to the host Lady Cats 25-21 and 25-17 to wrap up tournament play.

The Lady Scotties (3-4) take on Hart County tonight in a home match at Glasgow Middle School.



Lady Falcons fall in Edmonson County tourney title game

BROWNSVILLE — Monroe County advanced to the championship game of the Edmonson County volleyball tournament this weekend before falling to Warren East in the finals.

The Lady Falcons had a win over Hart County (25-22, 25-14) and two victories over Edmonson to advance to the finals.

Monroe fell to East 25-22, 11-25 and 14-15 in the championship game.

The Lady Falcons host Clinton County on Tuesday.



Wade ties for 55th at Virginia FUTURES Tour tourney

RICHMOND, Va. — Whitney Wade shot a three-round total of 221 to tie for 55th in the Greater Richmond Duramed FUTURES Tour Classic at Richmond Country Club.

The Glasgow High School and University of Georgia graduate shot a 72 in Friday’s opening round, fired a round of 75 on Saturday and finished with a 74 on Sunday.

Haeji Kang of South Korea shot a 205 and beat Sophia Sheridan of Mexcio in a playoff to take the tournament’s title.

The next FUTURES event is the ILOVENY Championship Sept. 5-7 in Albany, NY.



Red Cross PTO Donkey softball game set for Friday

Red Cross PTO is sponsoring a donkey softball game Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Red Cross school. Bleacher seating is limited, so bring lawn chairs or blankets.

David Givens and Steve Newberry will compete to diaper a donkey.

Tickets in advance are $6 for ages 13 and older, $4 for ages 4 to 12 years, and those 3 years and younger get in free. Tickets at the gate are $5 for ages 4 to 12 years, and $7 for those 13 and older.

The PTO will grill and sell hamburgers, hot dogs and pork shoulder.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at Red Cross Elementary or by calling John Doyle at 678-1250.

Proceeds go to the PTO for school functions and activities. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.



GYS football sign ups run through Tuesday

Area youth can sign up for Glasgow Youth Sports football (tackle and flag) and cheerleading through Aug. 19.

Sign ups will be accepted Monday from 5:30-7 p.m. at South Green Elementary School and Tuesday from 5-6:30 p.m. at Glasgow Middle School.

The draft will be Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Glasgow Middle School. All new tackle players must attend.

There is a $50 registration fee for tackle football, a $35 fee for flag football and a $25 fee for cheerleaders. Proof of insurance must be provided before a child can play. The 24-hour school insurance policy is acceptable.

Players and cheerleaders in Glasgow Youth Sports tackle football must be at least 9 years of age and not more than 13 years of age or beyond sixth grade as of Dec. 1. Due to popularity, junior varsity teams will be continued this year (subject to number of players who sign up).

Players and cheerleaders in Glasgow Youth Sports flag football must be at least 6 years of age and no more than 10 years of age before Dec. 1.

Anyone interested in coaching flag football or sponsoring a cheerleading squad should sign up before Aug. 19.

    As Lora Garrett prepares the Glasgow High School swim team for this weekend’s Kentucky High School Athletic Association Region 1 Swimming and Diving Championships in Owensboro, she sees a lot of positives for her team. Meghan Taylor is swimming well in the freestyle and Grayson Reynolds is swimming well, as are a couple of the Lady Scottie relay teams.

  • Barren County boys lose, 84-81

    For 31 minutes and 24 seconds of Tuesday’s game against visiting Russell County, the Barren County Trojans were playing some pretty good basketball. Barren County was shooting well over 50 percent from the field, was playing good stingy defense on the Lakers and, with just 36 seconds remaining in the game, the Trojans were in striking distance, trailing 81-79.

    The Glasgow Lady Scotties won handily on the basketball court Tuesday night with a 71-35 win over the Metcalfe County Lady Hornets. It was a big night for Glasgow, as it was only the second time in the school’s history that the girls’ basketball team won 20 games.
