PRINCETON - Glasgow gave up 268 yards on the ground and the Scotties’ fourth quarter comeback fell short in a 20-14 loss to host Caldwell County in the Trice Hughes Chevrolet Bowl.

“We end up six points short against a team that scored 27 last week against a team that’s supposed to be a pretty good team,” Scotties coach Billy Lindsey said. “The way I look at it we’ve just got to keep getting at it and keep working at it and we’ll work things out.”

A week after putting up 341 yards against Madisonville-North Hopkins, including 185 through the air, the Tigers rushed for 268 yards and passed for only 37 against the Scotties.

“It’s sort of like we said before, you sort of pick your own poison,” Lindsey said. “The problem is, we were in position to make some plays and didn’t do a very good job of tackling.

“We still played better than we did last week.”

Glasgow had 227 yards of offense. The Scotties managed 136 on the ground and 91 through the air.

The Scotties got on the scoreboard first with a first quarter touchdown run. Glasgow put together an eight play 50 yard drive that ended on a one-yard scoring run by Tavion Parrish. Mason Shives connected on the extra point to give the Scotties a 7-0 lead with 7:01 left in the first quarter.

Caldwell got its first touchdown on a four-yard run by Tron Gray with 3:13 left in the opening frame. The Tigers didn’t connect on the point after touchdown attempt and the Scotties led 7-6.

Neither team could cross the goal line in the second quarter as Glasgow held a 7-6 advantage at the half.

The Tigers took advantage of a Scottie penalty in the third quarter that aided them in their drive. Glasgow was flagged for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on a third down play that would have made it fourth and seven for Caldwell. The Tigers instead got a first down because of the miscue.

Caldwell later scored on a touchdown run from Gray, his second of the game, to take a 12-6 lead on that drive. Brandon Sigler ran in the two point conversion for a 14-7 advantage at the 6:45 mark of the third quarter.

“I can’t go back and say that was the thing that cost us the ball game,” Lindsey said of the penalty. “It was a mistake. But there was also some mistakes out there where we didn’t tackle, throws where we didn’t hit the man open, missed a block and all those kind of things.”

The Tigers added their third touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Marcus Wimbleduff scored on a two-yard run to push the lead to 20-7 with 10:48 left in the game. Caldwell missed the extra point.

Glasgow got a big play to get back in the game midway through the fourth quarter. Tyler Lindsey found Stacy Sullivan for a 66-yard touchdown pass to cut into the lead. Shives hit the extra point and set the score at 20-14 with 7:22 left.

“They had everything stacked up inside, and to be honest with you, it was pretty good coverage,” coach Lindsey said. “The ball was thrown pretty well and he (Sullivan) makes a nice catch and makes a nice inside dip and cuts back to the outside and then he uses his speed to lengthen it out a little bit. There’s no doubt that he’s definitely a playmaker. He’s made some good plays for us and we’ve got to keep getting him the football.”

Glasgow forced Caldwell to punt on its next possession, giving the Scotties the ball back at their own 18 with 2:50 left.

Tyler Lindsey found Parrish for a 25-yard completion on Glasgow’s first play of the drive. The quarterback was sacked for a nine yard loss on the second play and threw an interception on the play after the sack.

Glasgow did get the ball back one final time, but was unable to score with just 16 seconds remaining in the game.

Despite the loss, the Scotties coach thought his team improved from week one to week two.

“I do think our effort was better,” Lindsey said. “Our guys played with more intensity. They sort of rose to the occasion at times. Again, at one time it was going pretty bad. It looked like it could be a mess there late and not an indication of how close the game really was.

“But our guys battled back and were able to score and had an opportunity there those last two times, we tried to block the punt, just couldn’t quite get to it. And we were able to do some things. We’re going to get a little bit better next week and maybe a little bit better the next week and by the time we get into our district games, we’ll be very competitive.”

The Scotties are back in action Friday when they host cross-town rival Barren County. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

“It’s the most important game because it’s the next one,” coach Lindsey said. “And we’ll be ready to go.”
