Big plays push Adair over Barren

COLUMBIA - The big play doomed Barren County on Friday night.

Adair County scored on plays of 18, 40, 61 and 75 yards and put up 420 yards of offense to hold off the visiting Trojans 28-21.

Barren got on board first with an 8-yard touchdown run from Colton Phelps with 10:58 to go in the first half for a 7-0 lead.

Adair knotted the game on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Brad Moore to Corey Helm to tie the game. Moore hit Helm once again on the next drive, this time on an 18-yard scoring pass, to give the Indians a 14-7 lead with 3:12 left in the opening half.

Moore went to the ground for the Indians’ third score, scampering for a 61-yard touchdown for a 21-7 lead with 7:16 left in the game.

The Trojans found life with a big kickoff return. Kris Aquino returned the ensuing kickoff 63 yards to the Indians’ 7-yard line. Gill Thomas ran it in from there on a 7-yard run to cut the lead to 21-13 at the 6:53 mark of the fourth quarter.

Adair got its biggest scoring play just over two minutes later. Moore tossed a 75-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Murrell with 4:32 left for a 28-13 lead.

Barren fought back and cut the lead to one score with 1:36 left on a 1-yard touchdown run from Jud Perkins. Thomas found Hunter Jones on the two point conversion pass to cut the lead to 28-21.

The Indians recovered the Trojans’ onside kick, but were forced to punt after three plays.

Barren got the ball back one final time but Thomas was intercepted with 29 seconds left to seal Adair’s win.

Phelps led the Trojans offensively with 89 yards rushing and 48 yards passing. He also scored a touchdown. Aquino rushed for 57 yards, Tim Sneed had 49 yards on the ground and Thomas rushed for 31 yards and a score. Thomas also had 11 yards passing. Sneed had a team-high five catches for 50 yards.

Moore was just 5-of-10 passing for the Indians, but threw for 180 yards and three touchdowns. He rushed for 78 yards and was also intercepted. Colton Hadley rushed for 75 yards and Tim Beard had 17 carries for 73 yards.

Barren fell to 2-6 with the loss, while Adair improved to 2-4 with the win.

The Trojans return to district play Friday when they travel to Bowling Green to take on the No. 3 Purples (6-1). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
