‘Beat the Heat’ tournament

The second annual “Beat The Heat” baseball and fast pitch tournaments will be hosted by the Glasgow Recreation Department July 23 through July 26. Age divisions in the baseball tournament are: 8u Coach Pitch, 10u Live Arm and 12u Live Arm.

Age divisions in the softball tournament are: 10u; 12u and 14u Live Arm.

Entry fee is $50 per team for the double elimination tournament. Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth rules will govern all play. Registration is being taken at Glasgow Recreation Department office at 309 S. Liberty St. Registration ends July 21 at 4 p.m.

Kiwanis Soccer

Registration for the Kiwanis Soccer League will begin on July 20 and continue through Aug. 14. Late night sign ups will be Aug. 10-14 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. This league is for girls and boys 6-12 years of age. Children must be six by Nov. 1 and cannot be 13 before Nov. 1.

League play will begin in September and games will be played on Saturday mornings as well as some Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Cost for this league is $20 per child with a discount after the first child of $5 per child for families who have multiple children signing up. A skills clinic will be conducted at the soccer complex tentatively on Aug. 17 at 5:30 p.m. for mini division (6-7 years) and Aug. 18 at 5:30 p.m. for junior (8-9 years) and 7 p.m. for senior (10-12 years). Children cannot play middle school or JV soccer.

State Church softball tourney

The Glasgow Recreation Department will host the ASA Church State Softball Tournament at Beaver Trail Softball Complex on July 31, Aug. 1-2. The cost per team is $200 for ASA sanctioned teams. If not sanctioned ASA, the cost will be $225.

This is a double elimination tournament.

The deadline to register is July 28 at 4 p.m. ASA rules will be in place.



Fall volleyball

The Glasgow Recreation Department’s registration for the Fall Volleyball will begin on July 27 continue through Aug. 21.

The leagues that are offered are as follows Co-ed 6’s A’s; Co-ed 6’s B’s; Co-ed 6’s Open; Church Co-ed 6’s Open; Men’s 4’s and Women’s 4’s. There will be a coaches meeting in late August at the Recreation Department, and league play will begin in early September.



Fall baseball and softball signups

The Glasgow Recreation Department will be offering youth baseball and girl’s fast pitch softball sign ups beginning July 20 and ending Aug. 20. Late night sign ups will be Aug. 17-20, from 4 until 6 p.m.

There will be two divisions of baseball for ages 10 and under and 8 and under, and two divisions of softball for ages 14 and under and 12 and under.

A child may play in whatever age group they participated in the summer.

The cost is $25 per child. Registrations will be taken at the Recreation Department office at 309 S. Liberty St.

  • Underdogs...

    With the likes of softball powerhouses Greenwood, Glasgow, Bowling Green and Allen County-Scottsville in the tournament, the Metcalfe County High School Lady Hornets, winners of the 16th District, are probably heading into next week’s Region 4 Tournament as underdogs.

    Another chapter in the Glasgow High School Lady Scotties’ fairy-tale softball season was written Wednesday night as they became the first GHS team since 1996 to claim the District 15 Tournament championship, after beating the tournament’s No. 1 seed and the No. 1 team in the state, the Allen County-Scottsville Lady Patriots, 1-0.

  • Couldn't give it up...

    Until a few weeks ago, Glasgow High School senior Shelby Ray wasn’t sure if she would pursue sports into her college career. Although a standout basketball and softball player, Ray thought it was time for her athletic career to come to a close so she could focus solely on academics in college. But in the end, she said she couldn’t imagine walking away from softball.

    After Glasgow High School center fielder Jordan Alexander settled under a fly ball to make the final out of the Scotties’ District 15 Championship game victory over Allen County-Scottsville Wednesday night, he raised his hands above his head, let out a big yell, and took off running to be with his teammates.

    A cornerstone in the foundation that Steven Murphy has used to build the Glasgow High School softball program has been pitching. He believes you start everything with good pitching and then you can build from there.

    The Barren County Trojans have struggled with their hitting over the last six or seven games of the regular season and unfortunately for the Trojan faithful, the problem arose again for Barren County on Tuesday in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association District 15 Baseball Tournament in Glasgow.
