GLASGOW —
Brett Meredith, the head boys’ basketball coach at Metcalfe County High School, is eager to begin play Thursday in the first Edmonton State Bank Holiday Classic, hosted by the Hornets.
Meredith, who has guided his freshman-and-sophomore-dominated team against some of the best teams in the state in the first half of the season, is hoping to see a weekend of more competitive games.
“We got together with Edmonton State Bank, and this is something they said they’ve wanted to do for a couple of years,” Meredith said. “So, we wanted to try and make sure we put together a competitive field that would give my guys a chance to compete and win some games against some good competition.
“We looked at the teams, at what kind of seasons they had and what they’ve got coming back, and most of us are in the same boat. I think this gives our community an opportunity to come out and watch some competitive basketball.”
The tournament runs Thursday through Saturday. Tournament pool play begins on Thursday at 3 p.m. CST when North Bullitt High School takes on Rockcastle County. Owensboro Catholic will battle Greenwood High School at 4:30, while Butler County and Todd County Central will play at 6 p.m. Metcalfe County will play Eminence at 7:30 p.m.
“We’re in Pool A with Eminence, Owensboro Catholic and Greenwood. Rockcastle County is in Pool B with Butler County, North Bullitt and Todd County Central,” said Meredith. “We’ve got a pretty good mix of teams. There will be a lot of youth in the tournament, I can think of at least five teams that have a lot of young players.
“North Bullitt might be one of the favorites. They return a little bit from last year, and Butler County is playing very well right now. And Owensboro Catholic always plays people tough.”
