GLASGOW — Tennis program begins

Celebrate a sunny Sunday by starting your child in Quickstart Tennis today.

Quickstart is a skill-development program for beginning tennis players. The YMCA is offering the program at the Barren County High School tennis courts.

Quickstart begins today and runs for consecutive Sundays through Nov. 22. Classes meet every Sunday at the tennis courts from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the program will take place in the YMCA’s gym.

Cost is $25 for the first child for Y members and $30 for program participants. There is a discount for additional children from the same family.

Quickstart is led by YMCA board member Terry Bunnell. The fee includes a T-shirt and also use of a tennis racquet for class if needed.

Girls basketball league offered

The YMCA is offering its first-ever girls basketball league next month.

Girls Rule! YMCA Basketball League is for girls ages 5 to 9. Two divisions are slated, for 5 and 6 year olds, and an older division for girls 7 to 9.

Practices will be held once a week during weeknights, with most games played on Saturday mornings.

The season begins Nov. 7 and continues until Dec. 19. After that, the YMCA offers the more traditional co-ed basketball program.

Cost is $32 for members and $47 for program participants.

Swim classes start

The YMCA offers swim classes starting this week.

Sign up now through Tuesday for swim lessons, which will begin Monday. Cost is $27 for members and $38 for program participants.

Parent/child classes run for seven weeks and meet for 30 minutes. Youth lessons last five weeks and meet for 45 minutes.

Swim team starts season

The YMCA swim team, the Killer Whales, is making waves in the pool.

The team started practice last week. Swim team members practice four days a week and compete in a handful of meets through the winter season.

Children must be in first grade to join the swim team. Also, they must be able to swim one lap in the pool.

There are at least a dozen new members of the swim team. They joined a team that was 59 members strong last season.
