Metcalfe loses to Tigers

Staff report

BARDSTOWN — Metcalfe County’s football season ended the same way it began: with a disappointing shutout.

The Hornets lost to Bardstown 19-0 in the first round of the 2A Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl. Metcalfe started the year with a 35-0 defeat at the hands of Barren County, but eventually won four games to close 2009 with a 4-7 record.

The Tigers scored their first touchdown with 1:50 remaining in the first quarter when Ricky Harper broke free for an 81-yard run to give Bardstown a 7-0 lead.

Metcalfe held Bardstown scoreless for the remainder of the half, and even prevented the Tigers from gaining a first down until late in the third quarter.

Despite its struggles moving the ball, Bardstown managed to move it past the goal line two more times. Harper garnered his second touchdown of the night on a 16-yard run with 1:22 left in the third, and added another with 4:02 left in the game.

Metcalfe’s own ball movement struggles prevented the team from closing the gap.

The Hornets rushed for 125 yards as a team, with Colton Satterly leading them with 51 yards on 17 carries. Passing wise, Quarterback Justin Bonnema went 3-13 for 21 yards through the air and Shea McCoy led the team defensively with nine tackles.

The loss ends the careers of nine Metcalfe seniors: Satterly, Bonnema, McCoy, Kyle Holley, Tyler LaFever, Cam Jolly, Dalton Morgan, David Beauchamp and Sean Leming.
