Trojanettes come back against Owensboro

Staff report

GLASGOW — An early deficit and 31 percent shooting from the field didn’t stop the Trojanettes from beating Owensboro 50-42 in the opening round of the Shelby County Christmas Tournament on Monday.

“We got behind ten to nothing before we scored,” head coach John Butler said. “We battled and came back, but boy it was a struggle.”

Turnovers weren’t the usual struggle for Barren, though.

After battling ball control issues all season, the Trojanettes put up 17 turnovers, which Butler said is a major improvement for them.

Barren certainly improved as the game wore on. Owensboro built a fast 10-0 lead in the first, but the Trojanettes were able to outscore Owensboro 10-2 in the remainder of the quarter to pull within two heading into the second.

Barren cut the lead to 20-19 by the close of the half.

The Trojanettes took over in the second half, outscoring Owensboro 31-22 to win 50-42.

Kelsey Mitchell and Jamie Cummings accounted for 80 percent of the Trojanette offense. Mitchell and Cummings both scored 20, while Molly Bellamy (6) and Katie Davis (4) rounded out the scorers.

Considering the shooting concerns and stiff competition at the tournament - including Shelby County and high-ranked Rockcastle County - Butler is excited Barren came out on the winning end.

“We’re just happy we won and are in the winner’s bracket,” he said.

The Trojanettes play Shelby County at 6:45 p.m. local time tonight.
