GLASGOW — The Trojanettes had a three-game winning streak snapped Tuesday night with a 56-44 loss to Shelby County in the second round of the Shelby County Christmas Tournament.
Head coach John Butler said his team played much better than the score indicated.
“We played pretty good. We only turned it over 14 times, which is an improvement for us,” he said. “The game was a little bit closer than the score.”
According to Butler, Shelby County knocked down 15 of 17 free throws in the final frame to increase its lead.
The Trojanettes kept things close early, playing Shelby to a 13-9 score after one, but a 9-4 second quarter gave Shelby a 22-13 advantage heading into the half.
Barren’s offense more than equaled its entire first half offensive output in the third, scoring 15. The Trojanettes improved even more in the fourth by putting up 16, but were unable to overcome their first-half deficit.
Jamie Cummings led the Trojanettes with 20 points, followed by Kelsey Mitchell (9), Chloe Caudel (6), Katie Davis (4), Shelby Briggs (3) and Crista Seabolt (2).
Despite committing a season-low 14 turnovers, Barren’s continued ball-handling improvement took a hit when point guard Leah Caudel went down with a sprained ankle.
Butler said Caudel will miss Barren’s final game in the tournament, in which the Trojans will face 2008 state-champion Louisville Butler at 4 p.m. local time.
The Trojanettes are 4-4 on the year.
