Trojans down Atherton

Deckard leads way in high-scoring game

The Trojans extended Monday’s highly-productive second half against Hancock County into Tuesday when they beat Louisville Atherton 94-80 in the second round of the Hancock Holiday Classic.

Head coach Warren Cunningham said the offensive output was the highest achieved by a Barren County squad since he became head coach.

“The way (Atherton) played half-court man and put pressure on ball, we just had a lot of opportunities to penetrate to pitch to guys for easy shots,” he said. “It’s a lot more points than we’re used to.”

Those points didn’t pour in until the last three quarters, in which Barren scored 79 of its 94 points, including 30 in the final frame alone.

Cunningham said the offense didn’t come from a plethora of three pointers, but simply from quality shots.

“We were just six-of-21 from three,” he said. “We just a got a whole lot of easy opportunities.”

Luke Deckard especially took advantage of those opportunities. The junior led the Trojans with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Deckard was one of six Trojans in double figures, along with Ben Hubbard (15 points, seven rebounds), Caleb Dubree (11), Austin Birge (10), Tyler Hammer (10 points, eight assists) and Aaron Shives (10).

The Trojans will close out the Classic tomorrow with a game against Bourbon County.
