GLASGOW —
After an unsatisfactory 71-36 loss to the Green County Lady Dragons Monday night, the Caverna girls look forward to next season with higher hopes for their young team.
Although Green County was the No. 1 seed and their last meeting had ended in a 82-50 loss, Caverna Coach Cornelius Faulkner said he had expected a good showing Monday. The Lady Colonels lost to Green County by only eight points in their December match, and Faulkner was disappointed his team didn't have a game along those lines in the district tournament.
“We didn't play good at all,” Faulkner said.
A lot of missed free throws and unforced turnovers piled up, according to Faulkner. By the end of the first quarter the team was already down 25-8. Caverna came back a bit in the second quarter to outscore the Lady Dragons by a point, but by the third quarter they were down 56-29 and the gap only grew in the final quarter.
“We did the little things wrong tonight,” Faulkner said.
Reagan Kingrey had a good game with 14 points, Faulkner said. The junior guard played well all night, but the rest of the team wasn't with her. Caverna's leading scorer Madison Faulkner only grabbed six points Monday. Ciara Waggoner scored 11, Shardai Embry had 3 and Kiara Kirk had 1 point.
The Lady Colonels finished the season with a 12-19 record. Although Faulkner wasn't happy with the last game, it was the most wins Caverna had had in five seasons. Faulkner said he expects to see the team improve with age over the next few years.
“Overall, I feel pretty good,” Faulkner said. “We've got everybody back except our two seniors. I have three of my top five scorers back. I feel good about the next four or five years.”
Lady Hornets advance
A 41-29 win is good enough to push the Metcalfe Lady Hornets through to the next round of the district tournament.
Metcalfe did not play well, according to Coach Peter DiStefano, shooting only 20 percent for the game. But they were facing Cumberland County, whom they beat three times during the season, so a rough night still got the Lady Hornets the win.
“We looked really nervous the whole games, never really settled in,” DiStefano said.
The first quarter was close, ending in a 12-10 lead for the Lady Hornets, but the Lady Panthers came back to end the half tied at 17. Metcalfe pulled away in the second half, DiStefano said. They outscored Cumberland County 24-12 in the last half.
Despite the second half Metcalfe push, Cumberland County did a great job standing their ground Monday night, DiStefano said.
The Lady Hornets were led in scoring by Jordan Samuels, who had 12 points. Tayler McMurtrey scored 10, Riley Eskridge had nine, Taylor Noe had 6, Sarah Gilpin scored 3 and Samantha Perry got one point.
Moving forward, Metcalfe will play the winner of the Clinton County-Russell County game on Tuesday. Metcalfe has beaten Clinton County twice this season, and split a pair of games with Russell County. Russell County will be hosting.
In other action, Metcalfe County boys lost their district opener Monday night to Russell County by a score of 71-34.

Couldn't give it up...
