Barren kicks Monroe

Trojans seize first win of season with 6-1 triumph over Falcons

GLASGOW — Three goals from Tyler Hammer and two courtesy of Taylor Austin anchored the Trojans in a 6-1 win over Monroe County Tuesday night. Spencer Brown also added a score in Barren’s first victory of the season.

But head coach Laurence Nyekan said his team, still recovering from the loss of seven seniors from its 2009 squad, didn’t play to its full potential, despite the win.

“We have should have played better,” he said. “It’s a work in progress. Right now, it’s the third game, and we’re still trying to find a way to trust each other.

“And we played well when we started working the ball.”

The Trojans struggled to work their way into Falcon territory early in the matchup. The ball hovered near midfield in the initial minutes before Monroe’s  Edward Catalan and Tanner Elrod broke through the Barren defense to fire shots toward keeper Cade Lowry, who deflected the efforts. Those efforts kept coming in the first 28 minutes, as the Falcons nearly notched the initial score on a dump pass into Barren territory.

Near the 29th minute, Taylor Austin rebelled against the early trend, giving Barren a 1-0 advantage. Austin was on the other end of the game’s second score. On a corner kick, the senior lofted the ball over Falcon defenders and dropped it directly in the path of Hammer’s swinging leg. That leg one-timed the ball into the back of the Monroe net to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead just before halftime.

It was Barren who controlled the tempo in the last 40 minutes. Mere ticks in, Josh Madrigal placed a shot on goal. Monroe’s keeper absorbed the kick, but bobbled the save, allowing Hammer to tap the ball loose and boot it toward the keeper-less net before a Falcon stepped in between to keep the score stabilized.

Things soon became unsteady thanks to another rebound play by Hammer. From the far side of the field, Spencer Brown sent a shot toward goal that ricocheted off the tips of Monroe’s keeper’s fingers and rolled free at the cusp of the net. Hammer put a foot on the ball, which again pinball-ed off a Monroe defender and landed in the net to up Barren’s lead to 3-0.

Austin contributed his second goal moments later when he pivoted around defenders and fired a kick into the back of the goal.

Later in the half, a mishandled Lowry save put the Falcons on the board, lowering the Trojans’ advantage to 4-1. A Catalan free kick and Ernesto Carmona header-on-goal nearly provided additional scores, but Barren was able to clear both times.

Trojan insurance goals arrived in the 28th and 32nd minutes, respectively. Hammer capped his day with a penalty kick to increase Barren’s lead to 5-1, and Brown capped everyone’s day with a rebound score directly in front of the net.

The Trojans’ six goals represented their first offense of the 2010 season. Before Monday, Barren had failed to find the net in its season-opening games against Bowling Green and Greenwood.

Barren will attempt to continue piling up goals Saturday when the team “hosts” Glasgow at 5:30 p.m. at the Barren County/Glasgow soccer complex. Nyekan said his squad will no doubt go into Saturday’s rivalry game with a heightened intensity: an emotion he wishes he could instill in them for every matchup.

“They’ve been waiting for the Glasgow rivalry game, but I want them to not focus only on Glasgow,” he said. “I kind of wish I could pull rivalries out of a hat.”

Barren will follow the Scottie game with a Monday matchup at Warren Central.

  • BCHS boys get 'big' win

The Barren County Trojans have kind of been walking through a fog lately. The Trojans are playing good basketball, but after losing their last two games by a combined total of three points, a spark seemed to be missing from the BCHS program. The Trojans have battled through every game this season, diving after loose balls, fighting for rebounds, playing all 32 minutes. Barren County has definitely competed.
