Monroe County football coach John Petett has talked often this year about the play of his defensive unit. The coach always talks about how his defense is made up of 11 guys working together, heading toward one goal.
On Thursday night, the Falcons’ defense came up very big once again as they shut out district foe South Warren, on the road, by a score of 41-0.
“We’ve got a heck of a team and I am really proud of this defensive unit,” said Petett. “This was a big win for us and throwing up the shutout is very big for this team. South Warren is a really good team, so this was a big night.”
And the “big night” started very early for the Falcons. On South Warren’s second possession of the night, Monroe County’s John Stone Proffitt intercepted a Jay Eblen pass and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown. Brian White’s extra point was good and Monroe County led 7-0 with 8:43 to go in the first quarter.
The two teams exchanged possessions and the Falcon defense came up big again as they forced the Spartans into a 3-and-out deep in their own territory.
Defensive pressure from the Falcons pressured the Spartans into a muffed punt and the Falcons took over at the South Warren 38-yard line.
And in just four plays, Monroe County found the end zone again as quarterback Chad Wilson hit Tanner Strode for a 22-yard touchdown pass. White’s kick was good and with just seconds remaining in the quarter, the Falcons led 14-0.
