GLASGOW —
A dominant serving performance from Shelby Ray and front court play from Haley Perkins and Shalika Smith powered the Lady Scotties to a 25-8, 25-14 win over Barren County at Highland Elementary on Thursday.
Ray rattled off seven consecutive serving points in the first game and 13 total throughout the match to give the Lady Scotties their second victory over the Trojanettes this season. Barren didn’t enjoy similar success from the serving line, failing to garner an offensive point until Megan Harp utilized a Kelsey Mitchell spike to slice Glasgow’s lead to 14-8 midway through the second game.
A serve from the Trojanettes’ Cameron Lile opened the game, but Perkins tapped a set into an empty area on Barren’s side of the net to give the Lady Scotties the initial advantage. Perkins added a second point from service before the Trojanettes notched their first score of the game to retake control of the ball.
But it would be their last point for awhile. Glasgow laid claim to the next score, allowing Ray to step behind the line and amass seven straight to build a 10-1 lead. Barren was only outscored 15-7 for the remainder of the game, but the team was unable to string together consecutive scores, elevating Glasgow to a 25-8 triumph.
The second game provided a little more back and forth. Perkins kicked off the stanza with an ace, but the Trojanettes responded to knot the score at 1-1. Thanks to a pair of points courtesy of Ray, the Lady Scotties constructed a 4-1 advantage. Wayward serving efforts followed, however, putting the Trojanettes within 6-4.
And then Schaeffer Olson toe-d behind the line. The Lady Scottie junior fired four in a row and saw her final point transform to exclamation point when Smith landed a spike to up the lead to 11-4. Barren and the Lady Scotties remained seven points apart until Harp notched the Trojanettes’ first offensive point a few possessions later.
The score failed to fire any momentum, though, as Glasgow outscored Barren 11-6 in the contests’ waning moments to escape the second game with a 25-14 win.
With the victory, the Lady Scotties improve to 11-2 on the year, while the Trojanettes drop to 5-13.
The Lady Scotties will compete in the 4th Region All ‘A’ Classic this weekend, opening their portion of the tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday with a game against 9-2 Clinton County. Barren returns to action Monday when the team welcomes Monroe County.
