GLASGOW —
In what was unchartered territory, the Barren County Trojans fared well recently at the Kentucky High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Championship in Lexington.
The Trojans, in only their third season as a varsity sport, finished 58th out of 81 teams. State wrestling powerhouses St. Xavier and Campbell County finished first and second, respectively, in the final team standings.
“All in all, I’m extremely proud of all the guys,” said Barren County coach Luke Pniewski. “Just to make it to the state tournament on a third-year program tells me a lot about the character of these guys.”
The Trojans had three wrestlers in the competition. Zack Mesker, Michael Hargrove and Wesley Kinslow.
“Zack Mesker wrestled at 106 pounds, and he had a tough first round draw,” said Pniewski. “In his second match, he was doing well, had the kid on his back for the first period, but couldn’t finish the job. After going the full time, he lost by points. And Michael Hargrove had a tough draw, and lost his first two matches.”
However, Kinslow fared pretty well for the Trojans.
“Wesley Kinslow showed up to wrestle, and he wrestled well. He actually wrestled much better than I anticipated,” said Pniewski. “His first match was against a ranked kid from Louisville Central. He was big, strong, and I was thinking we were in trouble.
