Twenty-seven second quarter points lifted the Monroe County Falcons to a 48-0 drumming of Adair County at Darrell Carter Stadium Friday night.
Tanner Kendall notched 87 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, on top of grabbing two interceptions that helped the Falcons compile their productive second frame. Running back Corey Shirley added 85 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.
Monroe’s first score was sparked not by offense, but by special teams. Linebacker Dillon Vickery broke through the Adair line and blocked a punt. The ball spiraled free and the senior fell on it to give the Falcons a 7-0 lead.
Jackson Arnett doubled the lead at the start of the second with a one-yard touchdown run. At the 7:46 mark of the quarter, Arnett found Chad Wilson for a seven-yard score that increased Monroe’s advantage to 20-0. Less than two minutes later, Kendall marched in from nine yards out to stretch the lead to 27-0, and Shirley capped the half with a five-yard touchdown, handing the Falcons a 34-0 cushion going into the locker room.
Two additional scores arrived in the third quarter. With 8:25 to play in the stanza, Kendall added his second touchdown of the evening on a 12-yard rush. Following the same pattern they established at the end of the second, Shirley followed Kendall with a two-yard run that set the final score at 48-0.
Arnett went 7-10 for 121 yards and a touchdown. Tooley was the primary benefactor, hauling in four catches for 92 yards. Wilson contributed three grabs for 29 yards.
The win improves the Falcons to 3-0 on the season. After a season-starting three-game homestand, Monroe now embarks on two-game road trip beginning with Barren County this Friday.
Bishop Brossart 23, Caverna 22
A 22-3 halftime lead wasn’t enough for Caverna on Friday, as the Colonels surrendered 20 second half points, including a Bishop Brossart go-ahead touchdown with 46 seconds remaining, to fall to the Mustangs 23-22 on homecoming night.
Fourteen of Bishop’s points came in the third quarter: a span during which many Caverna players sporadically exited the game, leaving the remaining Colonels stuck in unfamiliar spots on the field, head coach Nick Stephens said.
“Our guys were playing hard on both sides of the ball, and I told them (football) is a just a break here and there,” he said. “And (Bishop) happened to get the breaks.”
Many breaks went Caverna’s way early. On Bishop’s first play from scrimmage, the Colonels picked off a Mustangs pass. Initially, Caverna’s inaugural drive sputtered and left the team mired in a fourth and 15, but quarterback Dearrick Lindsey remedied the situation by hitting Cole Hay on a 17-yard touchdown pass. Forrest Hurd ran in a two-point conversion to give the Colonels an 8-0 lead.
Bishop sliced that lead to five with a field goal later in the half before Lindsey rushed for 44 yards on Caverna’s next possession to set up a two-yard Hurd score. Jordan Rice added the two point conversion to up the advantage to 16-3.
A 32-yard Lindsey strike to Hay set up a three-yard touchdown for the Lindsey that set the halftime score at 22-3.
Then momentum shifted. With Colonels players occasionally sidelined, Bishop took advantage with a 48-yard pass play that cropped the Caverna lead to 22-10. Another Mustangs touchdown followed at the 7:08 mark of the third quarter.
The score remained stagnant until the final moments of the game. Bishop snatched possession of the ball when the Colonels failed to convert a fourth-and-two at the Mustangs’ 43 yard-line. The visiting team took over and drove the ball 57 yards to grab its first lead of the matchup with only 46 seconds remaining.
Lindsey went 11-21 for 147 yards passing and one touchdown. The junior also led his team in rushing with 67 yards on eight carries, with Jeremiah Butler adding 63 yards on 14 rushes. Cole Hay served as the top receiver, grabbing five catches for 70 yards and a score. Eric Denton led Caverna in tackles with 12.
The loss drops Caverna to 1-2 on the year. The Colonels face area rival Hart County next Friday.
“We just lost it in the end,” Stephens said. “We had an opportunity to keep (Bishop) from scoring and we just couldn’t hold on.
“But the kids fought hard.”
Hart County 24, Metcalfe County 6
The Hornets fell to 0-3 Friday night, losing at Hart County 24-6. Metcalfe will play its first home game of the year on Friday, when it hosts fellow 0-3 squad Logan County.
