GLASGOW —
A late Metcalfe County rally fell just short Thursday night as the Lady Hornets lost 54-46 to Russell County in the championship game of the District 16 Girls’ Basketball Tournament at Russell County High School in Russell Springs.
The Lady Lakers took the early advantage and led 13-12 at the end of the first period and outscored Metcalfe County 15-11 in the second quarter to lead the Lady Hornets 28-23 at the intermission.
But despite having two of his players suffering from the flu, the Metcalfe County girls came charging back in the final 16 minutes. The Lady Hornets matched the Lady Lakers basket for basket in the third quarter and trailed 41-37 heading into the fourth period.
“I was really pleased with the way we played,” said Metcalfe County coach Peter DiStefano. “We led for a while and were only down two in the fourth quarter. However, we missed a couple of shots late. Give Russell County credit, they played very well.”
Tayler McMurtrey led Metcalfe County in scoring with 12 points. MacKenzie Coleman had 11 points and Riley Eskridge scored 10. Taylor Noe had eight points, Samantha Perry had three and Katie Huffman scored two.
Four Metcalfe County players were named to the all-district team. They were: Jordan Samuels, Taylor Noe, Tayler McMurtrey and Riley Eskridge.
