GLASGOW — Glasgow’s Shelby Ray had 28 points Friday night, as her team won 64-56 against Clinton County. The 28-point game put her over the 500-point mark for her career, placing her in the same boat as fellow sophomore Haley Perkins, who also passed 500 points last week.
“Those two have quite a bit of season left and two years left in their careers,” Glasgow coach Chris Crain said of his two sophomores. “They both will definitely have 1,000 points before their careers are over.”
The career night for Ray started early as she hit two three-pointers in Glasgow’s first two possessions, giving the Lady Scotties an early 6-2 lead. A basket from Kelsey Greer and three straight points from Perkins gave Glasgow an even larger advantage at 11-2 with 4:21 to play in the first quarter.
Clinton County’s Brittany Flowers scored twice (once on a three-point play) to help move her team closer to Glasgow at 15-9 two minutes later. After that, however, the Lady Scotties closed out the first quarter strong with a quick 7-2 run. Ray and Shalika Smith each scored in the final minute to give Glasgow a 22-11 lead heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter wouldn’t be as well-played defensively, according to Crain. Flowers started to make more shots, giving her 12 for the first half.
“I wasn’t pleased with our defensive effort in the first half,” Crain said. “Especially on Flowers, I think we lacked intensity. In the second half, we just had to get other players playing defense besides Shelby (Ray).”
Flowers scored five straight points for the Lady Bulldogs, but Glasgow kept pace and their lead didn’t diminish. The Lady Scotties still led 27-18 with 2:54 to play in the half. That lead was quickly put back in the double digits as Ray stole the ball from a Clinton County player and scored a basket on the ensuing fast break.
The Lady Bulldogs would begin chipping away in the last two minutes after baskets from Breonia Thurman and Flowers. Glasgow would head into the locker rooms with a 30-23 lead. The first half seemed to be the half for high scorers, as Ray finished the first sixteen minutes with 17 points and Flowers finished with 12.
For the first six minutes of the third quarter, the game was almost completely even, with each team matching what the other did. Baskets were met with baskets and turnovers with turnovers on every play until there was 1:16 remaining. The score was 42-36 when Glasgow’s Shawn Smith hit a crucial three-pointer that extended the Lady Scotties’ lead to nine again. After a basket from Shalika Smith with three seconds on the clock, Glasgow’s lead was back to double digits at 47-36.
That didn’t last long, however, as Clinton County got within five points with 5:12 remaining in the game. Flowers hit two free throws to make it 49-44 and on the next possession for the Lady Bulldogs, Keistan Dalton scored to make it 49-46. A game that had seemed out of reach for Clinton was now a one-possession contest with more than five minutes to play.
Free throw shooting could have been the culprit, as Glasgow shot 12-26 from the line, compared to Clinton County’s 15-15. Crain has made free throw shooting a priority, especially considering the postseason is two weeks away.
“Free throw shooting is definitely a weakness that we need to capitalize on more,” he said. “Free throws win ball games and every possession is crucial. That’s our goal for the end of the season is to get better from the line.”
After finding themselves in a one point game at 51-50 with 3:34 on the clock, Glasgow started to pull away again. Perkins hit a key shot with 2:26 remaining to give Glasgow some breathing room at 56-52. Ray and Kelsey Greer both hit several free throws down the stretch to help the Lady Scotties hold on for the win.
Even after a win and a game coming up the next day against rival Barren County, Crain focused more on how far the Lady Scotties have come from last year and how much is possible for this team.
“This season has just been a great bounce back from last year,” he said. “I can’t emphasize enough how far we’ve come. In my coaching career, this is the greatest bounce back we’ve ever experienced.”

Cummings leads Trojanettes over Russell County
A coach, in any sport, prays for the night when everything comes together for his or her team. In basketball, coaches want their teams to play good defense, rebound and shoot the ball well. When a team can do those three things, and do them well, they’re hard to beat.
