Late foul opens way for Glasgow win

GLASGOW — With7.7 seconds remaining in Saturday’s Barren County-Glasgow girls basketball game, Micha Elmore had zero points, two rebounds and one assist. But with one whistle blow, she became the most important player on the court.

A called push-foul against Trojanette Leah Caudel prior to a Glasgow inbounds play sent Elmore to the free throw line, where she went two for two to push the Lady Scotties past Barren 42-41.

“Micha only had two points tonight, but they were the biggest two points of the night,” Glasgow head coach Chris Crain said. “I’m glad she was in the game when she was.”

Although Barren County coach John Butler praised Elmore for her clutch shooting, “glad” wouldn’t be the correct word to describe his post-game emotions.

“We played really well this week. It’s disappointing, but give Micha credit. She stepped up and made two big shots,” Butler said. “Everybody focuses on the last seven-second call, but there were other plays we missed. We lost track of their shooters at times, and that hurt us.”

Kelsey Greer and Haley Perkins dispensed plenty of hurt. Greer shot three of four from three-point range and led the Lady Scotties with 17 points. Perkins added 14 and ripped down 12 rebounds.

It would be Barren’s Kelsey Mitchell and Jamie Cummings that controlled things early.

After Glasgow’s Shelby Ray opened the game with a three-pointer, Mitchell responded with a field goal and a pair of free throws to put the Trojanettes in front at 4-3. Perkins rattled off four points in nine seconds to send the lead back to Glasgow, but two late baskets from Cummings sent the Trojanettes into the second quarter holding a 15-12 advantage.

Both offenses slowed in the second, combining for only 13 points. Cummings accounted for six of the 13, but it would be a basket from Barren’s Mary McKinney that made the difference. McKinney scored in the open court with 3:56 remaining in the half to provide the Trojanettes a lead they wouldn’t relinquish until well into the third quarter.

A Greer three-pointer at the 2:25 mark of the third stanza gave Glasgow back the lead. It didn’t last long, as a set of Cummings free throws and a Caudel jump shot gave Barren a three-point advantage going into the final quarter.

Barren clung to its lead until another Greer three-pointer put the Lady Scotties on top with just 1:26 to go. Cummings answered with two free throws to mark the score at 41-40 Barren.

44 seconds after that, things got interesting.

The Lady Scotties had possession of the ball with less than eight seconds remaining and were lined up for an inbounds play directly in front of their own bench. As soon as the inbounds play went into motion, the whistle sounded and an official walked toward the scorer’s table signaling a push. Elmore sank both free throw shots, and the Glasgow defense prevented the Trojanettes from getting off a shot in the waning seconds.

Cummings led Barren with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Mitchell added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Despite the loss, Butler said the his team — who fell to the Lady Scotties 48-44 at home on Jan. 2 — showed major signs of improvement.

“I’m very proud of our kids. We are a much, much improved team, and our guards have gotten better. They are why we are in close games like this,” he said. “I like watching us play right now.”

Crain liked what he saw as well.

“This was a rivalry game with a lot of emotion and I thought players from both teams did very well,” he said.
