Being 4’11” has helped Destiny Jones surprise opponents on the football field.
Being the only girl on the Caverna High School football team hasn’t made much of a difference at all.
“Everyone’s supportive of me,” Jones said before practice Thursday.
The biggest challenge for Jones, a freshman, was actually one Coach Rodney Middleton said he had to deal with.
“We had to tell the guys not to be protective of her,” Middleton said. “I told them she was part of the team and just to treat her that way.”
Jones has taken up her spot at middle linebacker for the Colonels despite her size and a few choice hits from some opponents.
“There was a player for one team that was clearly seeking her out and she took a few good hits,” Middleton said. “But I told her to get up and keep going and that guy got taken out of the game by the coach.”
Jones will start at linebacker on Friday when the team plays Mayfield in the first round of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Class 1A Playoffs.
