GLASGOW —
An RBI triple courtesy of Taylor White and a complete game from Reagan Kingrey weren’t enough for the Barren County Knockouts, as the 14U squad succumbed to D.C. Everest (Wis.) 6-1 Saturday night. The loss eliminated Barren from the 14U Ohio Valley Regional tournament.
Everest – the tournament’s one-seed – overcame two Kingrey strikeouts in the bottom of the first to seize a 1-0 lead. A single, a throwing error and a subsequent knock scored the initial run.
Thanks to a Maggie Bellamy rip into leftfield, the Knockouts placed their first runner on in the top of the second. But the Everest starting pitcher soon recovered, fanning Taylor Elmore and inducing a White groundout to first to squelch any possible rally.
D.C. notched another score in the bottom of the second, and stretched its advantage on a complicated play in the third. An Everest player reached on a roller to second to score the first run. The Knockouts were able to gun down an additional runner at home and punch out another at second, but amidst the commotion, D.C. sent a fourth player sprinting for home to up the lead to 4-0.
Kingrey kept things simple in the bottom of the fourth. The Knockouts’ starting pitcher fanned the side, setting up White’s triple in the opening of the fifth that brought in Taylor Elmore and diced the D.C. lead to three.
Everest soon made up for the run by plating a pair in the bottom of the fifth. Barren failed to reach base in the sixth, and despite a Brilee Houchens single in the top of the seventh, could never get any closer.
The defeat knocked out the Knockouts in the regional tournament’s semifinal round. The loss was preceded by a 14-2 drumming of Mt. Washington and a 2-0, Kingrey-powered win over Rhinelander on Friday night.
The team consisted of Kingrey, White, Houchens, Taylor Elmore, Abby Elmore, Breanna Furlong, Emily Baker-King, Emily Blair, Brianna Likens, Brittany Goodman, Breanna Dearing and Bellamy.
