John Butler, the head girls’ basketball coach at Barren County High School, didn’t have much to say after watching his team drop a 56-15 decision to Monroe County on Friday night. The Trojanettes committed 31 turnovers, many forced by a swarming Monroe County press.
“They have five quality guards. And it is hard to play five quality guards because most teams don’t have five quality guards,” said Butler. “They have five quality guards and that is a big asset for them.”
“We’re starting five guards and they have the ability to press. And I told them in the locker room before the game that our defensive pressure had to be great tonight and it was,” said Monroe County coach Dwayne Murray. “That was only our second game of the season and we’re still working out some kinks. But defensively, we did a great job of rotating, picking up the open person. Barren County put the ball on the floor tonight and I think we did a great job with our defensive pressure.”
And the pressure was relentless. The Lady Falcons pressed from the opening tip and ran quickly to a 13-2 advantage and led 23-2 at the end of the first quarter. Things didn’t get any better in the second period for Barren County as the Lady Falcons extended their lead and took a 36-7 advantage into the locker room.
