FRANKFORT — Those who want to change the way they’re registered to vote – either voters or candidates – and participate in the May 18 primary must change registration in their local county clerk’s office by Dec. 31.
Secretary of State Trey Grayson said he wanted to alert voters in advance of the deadline.
“Time is running out for citizens to change their party registration,” Grayson said. “We want to make sure every citizen has the chance to vote in the primary election of his or her choosing.”
In Kentucky, only a party’s registered voters may vote in that party’s primary election. Voters must be registered in that party by Dec. 31 of the preceding year in order to vote. The same deadline applies to candidates who may wish to change parties prior to the primary or run as an independent.
Voters can still change registration after Dec. 31 but they then will be ineligible to vote in the May 18, 2010 primary.
Those who wish to change party registration must submit a registration card to their county clerk in the county of their residence by the Dec. 31 deadline. Voters are urged to check with their local clerk for office hours during the holidays.
The 2010 ballot will include U.S. Senator, U.S. Representatives, even numbered state senate districts, state representative, local county officials and municipal city offices as well as District 3 for the Supreme Court and district judges.
